Disable Windows Messenger
Posted by Mikhail Esteves under: Tips; Windows .
Ever removed Windows Messenger but still found it popping up every now and then? Here are a couple of ways you can get rid of it.
Disable Windows Messenger
- Start | Run | gpedit.msc
- Go to Administrative Templates, then to Windows Components and then Windows Messenger and change the settings there.
Uninstall Windows Messenger
- Start | Run
- RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection windir\INF\msmsgs.inf, BLC.Remove
Stop Windows Messenger from starting automatically
- Start | Run | regedit
- HKEY_LOCAL_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- Delete the MSMSGS key.
Uninstall Messenger
- Edit \WINDOWS\INF\sysoc.inf
- Under [Components] you will see a line starting with msmsgs=ocgen.dll, etc. Remove the hide from the line.
- Go to Add/remove Windows Components and uninstall Windows Messenger.
Getting rid of ads in MSN Messenger
Surf to it’s default folder, edit links.txt, empty it, save it and make the file read-only.

maybe it’s not that elegant solution :) … but you still can rename it’s executable file, and will get the same results :) …
(i always do it like this…)
