rel external nofollow

Posted by Mikhail Esteves under: General .

I for one believe this new WordPress implementation of Google’s creation – avoid comment spam by treating every commenter as a spammer – is a shitty idea. I believe my weblog is not spam ridden, and even if it is, I think I can take care of it myself.

Tell me, why would you want to comment on anybody’s blog anymore? The reason almost always was to get a linkback to your site and increase rankings, visits, etc etc. (Okay, unless you’re a regular visitor or really have something to say.) Now we treat every visitor like a spammer, and that really won’t do much good will it?

I think WordPress (and others) atleast need to remove rel=nofollow for:

a) Comments that have been moderated
b) New comments by previously moderated commenters

And keep the rest as it is. Give us some options to control this in WordPress. We’ll decide how we like it!

Until WordPress changes the way this works, you can use the NoNoFollow plugin for WordPress. It removes the rel='nofollow' parts that WordPress adds to comment URLs.

I agree with you .. Atleast moderators have some control on their comments.

I agree with you, it will put some people off posting comments as they get nothing out of it.

I see your point, but I don’t, however, see a better solution to prevent comment spam. Comments made by those with the sole purpose of increasing their Google PR most often wouldn’t anyhow be that interesting.

I think the whole idea of posting comments to blogs is so that Humans ( who read them) can get some feedback on a post.

I think Google PR is over-rated ( alibeit id love a PR10 :-> )

Im new to this and think the world needs more humor , and thank Godness for blogs with some homor and where you can learn.

I plan to stay a while here!

Cheers

I agree with you, out will nofollow! I mean, nothing wrong with a person wanting a link to their site.

I have a feeling that google doesn’t pay as much attention to the nofollow tag as every thinks they do. I also feel that blog spam is a huge problem.. Some of my blogs get dozens of spam comments each day. Some of them were so bad I just decided to disable comments, which sucks.

Good point.

You can do this also manually. Edit the file “wp-includes/comment-functions.php” in the function “get_comment_author_link()” and remove the word “nofollow”.

The bad thing is that you must reedit this every time you update wordpress.

Well I think you can rewrite the whole function in the “config.php” file.

Don’t do this if you recieve a lot of spam.

This is the problem when websites are designed for Google and not Humans!

I totally agree, actually if I want a spam filter I use one of an other kind. Ok for the standard, there are moments when you want the link not to be followed, but not as a general rule in wordpress.

Yes, I find it irksome on Wordpress’ part or in case of any site which does it. When we are giving someone reviews, if we get nothing out of it, it is pretty much useless. Especially when our comment is already moderated and found to be fine.

I agree with you, it will put some people off posting comments, no one will want to post a comment if they get nothing out of it.
