I agree with you, it will put some people off posting comments, no one will want to post a comment if they get nothing out of it.

Yes, I find it irksome on Wordpress' part or in case of any site which does it. When we are giving someone reviews, if we get nothing out of it, it is pretty much useless. Especially when our comment is already moderated and found to be fine.

I totally agree, actually if I want a spam filter I use one of an other kind. Ok for the standard, there are moments when you want the link not to be followed, but not as a general rule in wordpress.

Good point.

You can do this also manually. Edit the file "wp-includes/comment-functions.php" in the function "get_comment_author_link()" and remove the word "nofollow".

The bad thing is that you must reedit this every time you update wordpress.

Well I think you can rewrite the whole function in the "config.php" file.

Don't do this if you recieve a lot of spam.

I have a feeling that google doesn't pay as much attention to the nofollow tag as every thinks they do. I also feel that blog spam is a huge problem.. Some of my blogs get dozens of spam comments each day. Some of them were so bad I just decided to disable comments, which sucks.
