Ask 10 developers what they think about startups. You’ll get a mix of responses involving risk, finanancial deprivation, and stress. But the one thing everybody will mention without fail is overtime. Startups are known for their frightening tendency to encourage developers to sacrifice everything at the altar of the 18 hour work day. The question, therefore, is how effective is overtime and should it occupy a place in the startup manager’s toolbox.

Does this mean that overtime is not useful? No. Overtime can be a very valuable tool. Just as racers must be able to mount the occasional sprint, startup businesses must be able to react quickly to emergencies and opportunities. Without the ability to react quickly, startups can lose business. So, what to do? You’ve gotta be able to sprint, yet overtime is bad. Here’s what to do.
